WitchTok: The Beginner Guide for Spiritual Seekers

Have you noticed more #Witchtok videos on your “For You” page recently? Never fear, you are not alone.

Across various media platforms, there is piquing interest in different spiritual customs and beliefs amongst the youth.

Witchtok, a subculture on TikTok, a social media video-sharing platform, is just one of many communities that links people who practice manifestationtarot readingcleansingnumerology and zodiacs just to name a few.

So what do all these mean, and how can you get started? Well, let’s break it down.

MANIFESTATION

One of the most popular topics and videos in the Witchtok community is manifestation.

Manifestation is the custom of speaking your goals, desires or wishes into existence.

Indigo La’faith, a tarot reader and astrologer on Witchtok, further elaborates on what manifestation is and why it’s important.

“The easiest way to manifest is to write it down, visualize it, and you have to let it go. This is the most important part because if you obsess about it, that means you don’t have it,”  La’faith said.

For example, if you want to manifest having body positivity, you may say or write, “I am great just the way I am,” or, “I attract self-love and think positively of my body.” The point is to speak your goals into existence and visualize it as if you were living them at the moment.

CLEANSING

Another popular topic is cleansing, which is the opposite of manifesting. Many use different cleansing techniques with crystals, sage or candles to release negative energy, thoughts or actions.

Cleansing and manifestation methods vary, so choose them wisely.

TAROT CARDS

Unlike manifestation and cleansing, tarot card readings are more of a specialty rather than an exercise.

Tarot readings are a specialty since people who exercise this takes the time to study or hone the craft. Unlike tarots, manifestation and cleansing don’t have to be a detailed specific one-way thing to study.

As a tarot reader, La’faith explains how she learned to do readings.

“I was introduced to Tarots by meeting who would soon become my coach. She would explain to me different meanings and bought my first deck of cards. Then, I started practicing on students at Tennessee State University and I was kind of shunned at first, but my readings would be accurate and they’d come back asking for more.”

Tarot card readings guide those who seek answers for occurrences in their lives and provide insight into the past, present or future.

NUMEROLOGY AND ZODIACS

Numerology and Zodiacs are complex topics. Numerology deals with the relationship between a number and particular events. It can also be associated with the numerical value of names or ideas, which is referenced heavily in other religions.

Zodiacs pertain toward your birth chart, rising, moon, sun and houses. Your zodiac could be Aries, but your 11th house is Taurus and a Cancer rising, which would go more in the depth of who you are as a whole.

Houses represent different aspects of your life, such as money, careers, family, love, etc.

Many of these topics are introduced on Witcktok and can be researched with the use of books or accurate professionals, but what determines if they are a belief or custom?

Spiritual practices and beliefs differentiate when labels come into play. These include words like “Voodoo” for faith or “Witches” to describe followers.

Just as a disclaimer, we are not talking about the witches with warts that ride on broomsticks.

These self-proclaimed “witches of Witchtok” take on the form of everyday people like you and me.

“Magick” is the term used to describe the energy extracted from spells. A “K” is placed at the end to separate it from the term “Magic,” which is associated with magicians.

Yet, there are various types of witches, such as Dark Witches, Light Witches, Green Witches, etc.

Dark and Light Witches get their title from the nature of their magick (whether it’s for healing or harmful purposes). A Green Witch grows herbs, which can be useful for spells or medicine. The natural forces of Earth are their primary source of energy for magick.

Logan, a.k.a. “Foxadellic” on Witchtok, is a film/media major at the University of Rhode Island and a content creator. Her magick is closely associated with the earth’s elements. From creating popular videos of her accidentally conjuring storms and bending the wind, Foxadellic states that, “Nature is us and we are nature, that’s how I see it. And if we aren’t in tune with nature, then we aren’t in tune with ourselves. I see nature as a mirror in all aspects of ourselves since everything is always connected.”

Sources of magick depend on the type of witch and tools used for spells.

Hexes are a type of spell used on someone or something for a negative result (commonly used by a Dark witch).

However, some choose spells for more superficial, positive reasons like protection.

Due to many differing practices and beliefs, it is overwhelming to understand everything right away.

Despite content creators enlightening people, some relay misinformation, which is often shared or reposted without proper research conducted. Studying such topics is highly recommended if you wish to indulge in them.

When testing the waters, whether it’s to practice a cleansing to rid yourself of bad habits or cast a love spell on your crush for Valentine’s Day, do so with clear intentions and research.
